Stop hunting for customers and start farming!

Hunting is more tiring than farming in the long run, for many reasons. One of them being that it uses a lot of resources in terms of energy output and time consumed.

This is an easily observable fact, yet most marketers and salespeople wake up daily to hunt for new prospects in a world that now has developed the tools to “farm and grow” them.

The best sales and marketing people tend to deploy strategies that are similar to farming. In the farming world indeed, a large amount of resources may be used to initiate a project whether it is livestock or plants being grown.

However as time goes on a self sustainable system emerges where the project scales up.

Imagine someone who starts off with 4 cattle, ending up with a kraal of 24 and then further multiplying the 24, whilst the hunter goes out into the unpredictable wilderness where he may actually return with nothing.

The farmer creates more predictable systems, even in the event that other cattle inevitably die or some crops do not do well. Most times the benefits outweigh the losses.

How can this be implemented in marketing?

Well in the online world there are many tools that exist on the market to harness and nurture customers. Pipelines that facilitate customer acquisition and retention, giving each acquisition a lifetime value.

At an entry people most people are already aware of the idea of email lists. Even then, most people do not know what to do with the emails once they have them.
